How to Follow Jesus

Why I Won’t Share Your Facebook Chain Post About Loving Jesus

How many times have you seen the picture, “I bet you won’t share this post!” And it’s got a picture of Jesus on the cross, or with little children and some Bible verse attached saying, “Deny me before men and I will deny you before the Father!”

Whoa now – does your salvation rest on whether or not you re-post a Facebook chain post? Regardless of the fact that chain posts are in fact ridiculous, how does this impact your faith?

I mean, I get it. You want the world to know you are a Christian – great! How about acting like one more than just once in a while when a chain post comes along on social media? And how about that, “Comment with Amen if you believe in Jesus and want all the blessings He has for your life!” Oh cool, so if I type the words “Amen” on a post, I’m entered into a drawing to win favor and possibly blessings from God, right? Sorry to disappoint you, but no.

Do we want these things? Yes. Do we automatically get them because God checks his Facebook every ten minutes like we do? No, but wouldn’t that be convenient? Let’s all private message the God of the universe on His personal Facebook account with our requests and tag Him in the comments section of our “Do you love Jesus” post! Here ya go, God! See? I MUST love you because I proclaimed it on Facebook for everyone to witness! In fact, I’m changing my relationship status right now to “In a relationship” with “Jesus Christ.” Let’s see how many likes I can get!

Wait a minute: in our utter cheesiness we totally forgot about reverence for Him. He is not a “god dependent on any mortal man,” the song goes. We have reduced Him and the holiness and glory that goes along with Him to mere human characteristics, as if God is impressed with the fish on the back of your car (by the way, the next time you put a fish on your car make sure you’re not cutting lanes and flicking people off in traffic, okay?).

If you proclaim the name of Jesus, you’d better be prepared to live up to that claim.

Live your life in a way that reflects Christ all seven days of the week, not just one.

The reason I won’t re-post your Facebook chain post isn’t because I don’t love Jesus – far from it! It’s because if the world doesn’t know I’m a Christian by my actions all the time, a Facebook post isn’t going to do it either.

“Be careful to live properly among your unbelieving neighbors. Then even if they accuse you of doing wrong, they will see your honorable behavior, and they will give honor to God when he judges the world.”
‭‭1 Peter‬ ‭2:12‬ ‭(NLT)‬‬
